Coaching Clinic - Serving Technique and Drills

Below are some videos taken at the Badger Region Volleyball coaching clinic run by Salima Rockwell of Texas and Brian Wright of Austin Performance. These videos focus on some serving technique and some good drills to teach this technique, especially for young or new players.

A serving technique drill aimed at getting good contact on the ball:

Helping Out Moku

Please read the below email passed along to us by Donise King from USA Volleyball from Angie in the Moku O Keawe Region (it's one of the two regions that make up Hawaii). If anyone is in the position to help send this first-year team to the HP Championships in Des Moines, you will be helping to make memories for these kids!

We all want the best for our membership and are inclined to help out the ones who really need the financial support.  Please take the time to read Angie Andrade-Morioka,  Moku O Keawe Region, email below. Please consider not only this one situation for Moku, but consider all the travel and trips that this region and members must make to participate and be a valuable region of the RVA/USAV family. Angie has already tapped into her local business’, but most of those on this small island, are mom and pop operations which she has reached out to before.  Some of our regions have much larger resources for helping to fund some of their projects and we are hoping that you will please consider to help out our sister region from Hawaii.

Hi Donise,  if you can help out in any way to get this message to the other regions, it would be greatly appreciated.

This  is the first time for Moku (Hilo) to send a select team to the HP Championships. Some of these kids on the team have never traveled off the island let alone to Iowa, whereas half of the team do travel with their clubs. We have 6 players going to the GJNC championships in Ohio, and they will have to fundraise for both trips.

The coaches are responsible for their own expenses and we are trying to help the 12 players only.

It's been a hard road trying to get funding. The kids are working hard on raising money, running garage sales, steak fry, silent auctions, grass volleyball tournaments etc.. I think we are spending more time hitting the pavement than the volleyball court. We need some slack and a donation of any amount would be great!! The 12 kids we selected are the best in their age group here in Hilo, Kona and Ka'u. I know how hard these kids are working raising money because they want to experience a whole different level of volleyball which perhaps will never happen again, especially from a small town in the middle of the pacific ocean. When I see them at practice they work even harder. How can we get there if we don't have the money, so they've been pushing themselves on and off the court! These kids are humble, fun & goofy all at the same time and they are amazing little athletes. They are so deserving of this opportunity to travel to this prestigious event. The total cost of travel / lodging is $23,000 from Hawaii!

We hope that it will be possible for you to help.  If you can, please send anything you can, to Angie at her address listed on her signature line.  In advance,  Thank You so much for helping one of our Regions!

Simone Lee Blog #3 - Day three at the OTC

Simone Lee is a member of Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold and is one of 24 players who has been invited to Colorado Springs and the U.S. Olympic Training Center to compete for a spot on the USA Volleyball Youth National Team. Lee will be blogging for the Badger Region during her experiences.
6/2/2012
Today was the last full day at the US Olympic Training Center! I'm so glad that I have made so many new friends.  And I know our friendships will last a lifetime! This blog, again, will be split into three sections: the morning, afternoon, and evening sessions.

Morning Session: During the morning session we started the same as always, with our dynamic warm-up. After that we were split up into three teams and played six on six until one team reached 15. Everyone was so ‘on’ this morning.  We had to really step up to score.  At one point the coaches stopped play to ask why there was a side out.  The answer was the setter and hitter didn’t keep doing what was scoring.   Duh!  After that we all played a lot smarter.  It really works!  The team that was off did a serve, pass, and hit drill. The coaches had wipe boards on each court to track passing:  1-2-3.  The best passers moved up to the next court.  Soon after, we split up onto three courts by positions. Since I am an outside/right side hitter I went with the outsides/right sides. We played six on six the whole time. To help the coaches evaluate the girls, they had a guy taking stats on all the passes, hits, blocks and digs by player.  Then we ended the session with a cool down. We went to lunch in the cafeteria and rested up for the afternoon session.  Did I mention how good the food is here?!

Afternoon Session: To start the afternoon session we, again, started with our dynamic warm-up.  Then we did ball control which consisted of passing back and forth, setting back and forth, and peppering back and forth. Because this isn’t a camp, we didn’t work on skills.  We went straight into six on six. Just like before, every contact was tracked.  Coach stopped us to tell us how many times we got a side out.  We weren’t getting enough to win matches.  And Coach said winning matches is the goal!  So we all worked harder to score on every attack, not just get the ball back over the net—even though we were tired.  We played on two different courts for quite some time but, the time flew past so quickly that it didn't seem long at all!! We soon did some serve receive and ended like we always do, with a cool down. Cool down was doing an Indian run (the run was more like a jog) like yesterday.

Evening Session:  Again, it was a really competitive session.  For our warm up we did triangle setting (ask your girls about this one). We played six on six but only the outside could score any points. It was a tough drill because the outside hitters had to pass out of serve receive and then go and hit the ball. We had another hitting competition with this drill.  The best hitters kept playing until the best two hitters were left.  The best hitters were the ones who could score the most on their attacks out of ten or 20 balls.  If the defense picked it up then it was a wash and the opposite side got the ball. The middles and right sides did a great job blocking some of these hard hit balls!! It was really good because the hitters had to come up with different ways to score because the blocks and digs were getting better and better!  The coaches then split us up into three teams and we all competed against one another like we did in the earlier sessions. The team that was off was doing serve receive and hitting outside and middle again. One team won all their games.  One team only won once.  Like I said before, everything was tracked.

But all in all, the last session was a great session! Since tomorrow is our last day at the Training Center, we really need to stay focused and positive.  They will tell us the results tomorrow after we have our morning session. Everyone did really well.  The coaches have a tough job ahead of them!  Only 12 girls will be chosen for a spot on the Girls Youth National Team.  Once we know, we’ll all breathe a sigh of relief.  Then we will all go to lunch and head on home.

This has been the most challenging experience in my life so far.  Thanks for joining me on this journey!

Today was another great day at the US Olympic Training Center! This blog will be split into three sections: the morning, afternoon, and evening sessions.

Morning Session: during the morning session we started the same as always, with our dynamic warmup. After that we played six on six until one team reached 5. After that we split up onto three courts by positions. Since I am an outside/right side hitter I went with the outsides/right sides. On that court we did serve receive and serving then we got into a pass, set, and cover drill. After that, the group joined together again and we played six on six. We ended the session with a cool down. Then we went to lunch in the cafeteria and rested up for the afternoon session.

Afternoon Session: To start the afternoon session we, again, start with our dynamic warmup. After warmups, we went right into six on six. We played  on two different courts for quite some time but, as always, it was a blast!! We soon did some serve receive and ended like we always do, with a cool down. This time our cool down was doing an Indian run (the run was more like a jog).

Evening Session: The evening session was one of the most competitive sessions yet. Everyone was working hard and hustling for every ball. It was awesome!! :) we played six on six but only the outside could score any points. It was really good because it showed the coaches who was going to still try and get a kill even when they were tired. The coaches split us up into three teams and then we all competed against one another. The team that was off was doing serve receive and hitting outside and middle.

All in all the sessions today were great! I am even more excited to compete tomorrow. Since tomorrow is our last full day, we really need to pull out all the stops and compete for a spot on the Girls Youth National Team.

Today was so much fun! I arrived in Colorado Springs and a shuttle bus took myself and five other girls to the US Olympic Training Center. The weather here is absolutely beautiful! (not too hot and not too cold). Once we got inside the doors we immediately had to get a registered ID. This ID will get us in and out of the building and get us in the cafeteria to eat our three meals.

After we got our IDs, we headed on over to the gold room where we received our three workout shirts and a grey sweatshirt. After all of that myself and a few of the other girls went to our rooms and unpacked our things. We had a lot of time to kill until dinner and our workout so we just caught up on each others lives.

At around 5:00 we all went downstairs for dinner. For dinner we had barbecue chicken, mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, Mac and Cheese, and a biscuit. It was DELICIOUS!! :) after dinner we all went to a meeting with all of the coaches talking about important things like substance abuse and drug tests, how to properly use a social media site (do's and don't's), and the importance of staying healthy during this tryout. The meeting was soon adjourned and we all headed over to the practice facility.

To start out practice, every session we will do a dynamic warm up to get our blood pumping. Our athletic trainer, Brian, will lead us through this. Today, since it was the first day, we didn't do a whole lot. We did some passing with partners, and serve receive, but after that we got into the competition. We played four on four for a little while then we added a middle hitter and the first hit had to be out of middle back. The setters had to set a ball called a bic. It is a little lower than a pipe and it is much closer to the net. After four on four, we ended this session with some short court. Brian didn't want us to just stretch, he said that keeping your heart rate up will help the cooling down process. After the short court we ended the day like we end every session, with a loud USA!! Today was so much fun! I can't wait to play even more volleyball tomorrow and compete for a spot on the Girls Youth National team!
